NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT

Angel Park Las Vegas Nov. 10-12, 2014
"THE TRIP OF PUTTING"
Many of you know that we held an away tournament in Las Vegas at Angel Park. I thought it would be fitting for those of you that went and those that didn't to see just how nice it was there. My wife, Sue Knight, and I arrived a day early, so we could play one of the courses in advance, something we do every year. We decided to play the Mountain Course. Here is how it started out. I hit a drive, about 270 leaving me with an approach shot of about 90 yards. I hit the green in regulation and there is where the trouble began. I had no problem holding green or even drawing the ball back. These green's are some of the fastest green's I've ever putted on. Not only that but they are some of the most difficult to read. Do I need to say, I three putted? This happened a lot, more than I like to say! It was a challenging day with the ball travelling farther than usual due to the thin air. As we played each hole, we made adjustments the best we could and enjoyed the round. We got lots of practice putting since the holes were not flat but on a camber similar to Riverwalk. It is a beautiful course and the weather was great.
TUESDAY: Everyone arrived in Las Vegas at the Suncoast Casino & Hotel by Monday evening and was ready to go on Tuesday morning with our first tee time of 9 AM. Angel Park had our carts set and range balls available. After warming up, we headed out on the Mountain Course. The air was still dry and the putting fast but we all had an enjoyable time, great weather and lots of putting practice!
That evening Al Sturken had arranged a hospitality suite at the hotel for all of us to meet. What he didn't tell me was that the hotel gave him and his wife Ann a suite. My wife and I were one of the first ones to arrive. Now we know how the other half lives! First there was a beautiful view of Las Vegas out in the distance and oh did I forget to tell you, they are on the top floor! Al and Ann had gone out and gotten nice snacks and drinks for the gathering. Almost everybody was there except two individuals. Now wouldn’t you know one of them, was a winner in the tournament and had one of the closest to the pin's. Oh well!!!!! It was a great time for all of us to get to really know each other. We look forward to having a hospitality suite again. The winners for the first round on the Mountain Course were announced.

WEDNESDAY: It's a new day and we are now playing The Palm Course. I had never played this course before, so I really had no idea what to expect. I was told it was a little bit easier than Mountain. Well it was a bit easier than the Mountain Course but we all still practiced a lot of putting! The course was in great shape and the weather again was perfect! Everyone had their challenges but the club members all enjoyed the beautiful course, the company and the excellent weather.
After play we met outside in the patio where I was able to check the score cards and determine the results of the day on the Palm Course.
Flight A Low Gross John Schuricht (69)
Flight B Low Gross Sue Knight (90)
Low Net Joe Newman (70)
Low Net Ann Sturken (69)

I thought this would give you a good idea of just what we do on the away trips. We all had a great time. For next year’s away trip in Laughlin, we are trying to schedule it one week later than our regular schedule-- November 17-18 so we can avoid the Veteran’s Day crowds. We are also setting up a Temecula two day tournament. This will be held in April or May. I hope to see you there!
